Orthodontics has evolved significantly in recent decades, offering more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing options for correcting dental misalignment. One of the most notable innovations is invisible orthodontics, a treatment that has become very popular thanks to its discretion and effectiveness. In this article, we explain how invisible orthodontics works and why it could be the ideal option for you.
What is invisible orthodontics?
Invisible orthodontics is orthodontics carried out with clear aligners. It is the orthodontic treatment that uses, as its main appliance, a series of transparent, removable plastic trays to align the teeth. Unlike traditional braces, these aligners (plastic trays) are practically invisible and barely rub, which makes them the preferred option for patients looking for a more comfortable and aesthetic solution.

Is invisible orthodontics right for me?
The first step is to consult a specialist orthodontist. During this visit, the orthodontist will assess your dental health and determine what type of orthodontic treatment you need and whether it can be done with invisible orthodontics. To determine this definitively, a study will be needed. X-rays, photos and digital scans of your teeth will be required to create a personalised treatment plan. At Dr Amparo Lorca’s clinic we specialise in carrying out orthodontic treatment with clear aligners. On some occasions we combine it with fixed appliances for a time to overcome any difficulties we may have with invisible orthodontics, and in this way we can make sure all patients have the option of being treated with invisible orthodontics safely and effectively.
How can a plastic tray move my teeth?
Clear aligners are manufactured from an established treatment plan. Using software and the digitisation of the patient’s bone and dental structures, the orthodontist carries out the orthodontic treatment digitally, arriving at a final result and knowing at each stage how the teeth will move. It is the orthodontist who must be behind each plan, to know the best way for the teeth to move in each case and what the final result will be, personalised for each patient.
In this planning, attachments are designed (small bumps that are bonded onto the teeth), which give us more contact surface on the teeth where needed in order to guarantee effective tooth movement.
What will my invisible orthodontic treatment be like?
Once the treatment plan has been approved, a series of custom aligners will be manufactured. Each set of aligners is designed to move your teeth gradually towards the desired position. Aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink (except water), brush your teeth and floss. Each set of aligners is worn for about one or two weeks before moving on to the next set.
Throughout the treatment, you will have regular appointments with your orthodontist to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments. These visits are usually every 6 to 8 weeks. In this treatment there are pauses, because once the initial aligners have been used up, further aligners can be ordered to reach the best possible result. The patient rests for about 4 weeks while the new aligners are manufactured.

At the end of the treatment, you will be given retainers to keep the teeth in their new position. It is crucial to follow the orthodontist’s instructions to prevent the teeth from returning to their original position.
What are the benefits of invisible orthodontics?
- Aesthetics: The aligners are almost imperceptible, which makes them ideal for adults and teenagers concerned about their appearance.
- Comfort: Without metal brackets and wires, aligners are more comfortable and less likely to cause irritation in the mouth.
- Removable: You can take them out to eat and brush your teeth, which makes it easier to maintain good oral hygiene.
- Fewer visits to the orthodontist: Because fewer adjustments are needed, visits to the orthodontist are less frequent than with traditional treatments.
In short, invisible orthodontics is a modern, comfortable and aesthetic solution for those who want to correct their smile without the drawbacks of traditional braces. If you are considering orthodontic treatment, invisible orthodontics could be the perfect option for you. Consult a professional and find out how you can get the smile you have always wanted in a discreet and efficient way.
