Once a previous root canal treatment has been diagnosed as unsatisfactory or as causing disease, the old material is removed, all the canals are disinfected and then sealed. This treatment is needed when previous treatment did not disinfect enough, missed a canal or did not clean the full length of the root, often because of difficult anatomy.
